The title Better than the Beatles! comes from Frank Zappa’s possibly ironic assessment of the album Philosophy of the World by the legendary Outsider Music trio The Shaggs, the story of whom the novel is (very) loosely based. It tells the story
of Merseybeat also ran Sam Singer, his identical triplet autistic savant daughters, and how the humble cassette album they recorded together in the late seventies became an unlikely hit three decades later. The novel is part family saga, part fragmented history
of British Rock music, and part exploration of life at the social and cultural margins. It is a book that will make you laugh, make you obsessively fact-check, and perhaps even stir a few deeper emotions. Four and a half years in the writing it is, like the
music of the album triplets itself, utterly unique.
